‘Don’t pull away, policeman, look at thy hand.’ The old women was holding him with her thumb while with her fingers she was lightly touching the back of his hand: first the sharp blackened nail of one finger, then the next, then the next. ‘You want poison policeman, I offer you poison,’ she said. ‘Each finger nail is dipped in a different poison, one means instant death, one means only pain, the other two are more interesting…choose policeman.’

Lembert’s gaze was now transfixed by the moving fingers, each nail denting the skin slightly before being replaced by the next.

‘Look old women I mean you no harm…’ he started.

‘Don’t pull away, one scratch is all it takes. Choose policeman.’ The fingers started going more and more quickly. ‘Choose policeman, I grow weary,’ her voice rose ‘Choose policeman or I shall choose myself.’

‘Three!’ it was jerked out of Lembert almost involuntarily. He had his eyes shut not believing this was happening to him, in this dirty little road from this dirty old woman. Everything had gone quiet and slowly he opened his eyes, the old woman was waiting for him, her third fingernail denting the back of his hand.

‘Devil’s wolf bane, an interesting choice,’ she cackled. ‘Nearly natural to Moloo, it just needed a little tweaking. It’s the rotting poison, one of my favourites:
